You and the Sun: 10 Burning Questions

While you bake in your lounge chair, ultraviolet light from the sun zaps through your skin and kills living cells that normally work to help make new skin. Ultraviolet A, UVA, can travel more deeply into the skin, but both UVA and UVB rays can burn skin.

Breaking the News About Breast Cancer

By Kathleen Doheny

HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, Aug. 7 (HealthDay News) — Shelley Volz, now 59, got the news about her breast cancer diagnosis 10 years ago, right before she was headed from San Francisco to New York for the wedding of her younger brother.

While she says she doesn't think she found it as difficult as many people to disclose the diagnosis, she did think about others' reactions.

Ideally, Yoo said, women should do less of that at this time. "It's a time they should be caring about themselves, what decisions they should be making about breast cancer. They shouldn't emotionally burn themselves out by caring for others' emotions."

Yoo's advice: "We tell women to seek out other breast cancer survivors, other women who understand, to increase their resources." And focus more on getting emotional support than giving it.

Breast Cancer: Cause

Content provided by Healthwise
small text medium text large text

Cause

The exact cause of breast cancer is not known. Female hormones and increasing age play a part. The chances that you will develop breast cancer increase as you age. In the United States, about 1 in every 8 women who live to be 80 will have been diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her life.2

Many people believe that only women have breast cancer. But, although rare, about 1% of all breast cancer occurs in men. Most men who have breast cancer are older than 65, but it can appear in younger men. For this reason, any breast lump in an adult man is considered abnormal.7

Stanford researchers find hair growth trigger

By Vianna Davila
Mercury News

Stanford University researchers have pinpointed a molecule that triggers hair follicle growth in mice, a treatment that one day could eventually mean some shaggy dos, or at least a few more strands, for humans who have experienced hair loss.

"Loss of hair is not going to kill anybody," said Dr. Peter Marinkovich, the study's senior author and an associate professor at Stanford University's School of Medicine. "At the same time, for some people, hair loss can be a really traumatic thing, especially for women."

Marinkovich said his team hopes to repeat the tests on animals treated with chemotherapy and later on human subjects.

The findings are "important in the long run," Cotsarelis said, calling the Stanford study, "one of the initial steps."

AIDS deaths down 10% in 2007

New infections in children also declined, a U.N. report says. Greater access to treatment is cited.

By Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

The number of AIDS deaths worldwide dropped 10% in 2007 because of increasing access to treatment, as did the number of new infections in children, the United Nations reported Tuesday.

Condom use and prevention efforts increased in many countries and adolescent sexual intercourse declined in some of the most heavily affected regions, the report says.

2 House Members Say Sources In China Infiltrated Electronic Info On Political Dissidents

In an interview Wednesday, Wolf said the hacking of computers in his Capitol Hill office began in August 2006. He says a computer at a House committee office also was hacked, and he suggested others in the House and possibly the Senate could be involved.

U.S. life expectancy tops 78 for the first time

Federal report cites decline in heart disease, other major causes of death

ATLANTA - For the first time, U.S. life expectancy has surpassed 78 years, the government reported Wednesday, although the United States continues to lag behind about 30 other countries in estimated life span.

The increase is due mainly to falling mortality rates in almost all the leading causes of death, federal health officials said. The average life expectancy for babies born in 2006 was about four months greater than for children born in 2005.

Japan has the longest life expectancy — 83 years for children born in 2006, according to World Health Organization data. Switzerland and Australia were also near the top of the list.

Some people wake up each morning before the alarm rings, glad to see the glowing sun and excited to start the day.

They arrive to work whistling and are hard at work before most people even arrive. These rare creatures, also known as "morning people," are incomprehensible to those of you whose morning routines are exercises in panic and frustration.

A lot more people belong in that latter group than you might have guessed. Fifteen percent of workers admit to arriving late at least once a week, according to a recent CareerBuilder.com survey.
